Denver Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cells are unique naiive cells that have the ability to become different types of cell types such as muscle, skin, bone, and nerves. There are different types of stem cells that our body posses including Neuro (nerve), Epithelial (skin), Endothelial (GI tract), Hematopoietic (blood), and Mesenchymal (connective tissue). The vast majority of Regenerative or Stem Cell Therapy today uses two types: Hematopoietic (HSC) and Mesenchymal (MSC). There is a ton of research that has demonstrated that these cells can be used safely and efficaciously.

Most people do not realize that we have been using Regenerative or Stem Cell therapy for years. In 1956 the first bone marrow transplant was performed to save the life of a twin with Leukemia (a blood cancer). Bone Marrow Transplant is Regenerative medicine because it contains certain types of stem cells. Over the last 20 years this field has aggressively grown in both understanding, acceptance, and advancement in the development of various therapeutic modalities to potentially treat a plethora of medical ailments.

What is a Stem Cell?

A mesenchymal stem cell is a primitive cell with the ability to:

Types of Stem Cells

Allograft Cells. Donated Umbilical Cord Blood and Wharton’s Jelly. These cells are harvested from the cord blood of umbilical cords.

Cord Blood

Wharton’s Jelly

These cells are harvested from a the tissue product within the umbilical cord that surrounds the cord vessels (2 arteries and 1 vein). It has a very high concentration of MSC and very little other cellular products present.

Autograft Stem Cells. Tissue obtained from self. Marrow and Adipose (fat)

Pros

Cons

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy

Adipose tissue (fat) aspiration

Ethical and Moral Concerns

There is a misconception when it comes to the moral and ethical controversy regarding the use of Stem Cells for therapeutic benefit.

This controversy is due to the use of “Stem Cell” as a global description. Stem cells come from various tissues including Embryonic, Fetal, Umbilical, and ones own native stem cells.

Embryonic and Fetal stem cells are not allowed to be used in the United States and almost all First World Countries due to the ethical issues surrounding these tissues.

In addition to ethical and moral issues, these tissues if used can be dangerous. They are dangerous because they can potentially develop into any tissue including whole organs and organisms and can actually cause cancers if used.

Umbilical stem cells are derived from the after birth products subsequent to the normal (vaginal or cesarean section) delivery of a baby. Historically, some people have chosen to have the cord blood cryopreserved for potential future use.

Otherwise, these incredible tissues have been discharged as waste until recent years. Our understanding of these tissues grows everyday.

In the some 50,000 documented MSC stem cell treatments performed, there has never been a serious adverse reaction due to the stem cell itself, making it a very powerful and safe treatment option.
