IV Supplementation

IV Hydration Therapy in Denver Colorado

An increase in health awareness has led to a monumental leap and general acceptance in the use of intravenous (IV) hydration and supplemental infusions. Many IV infusion centers of Denver providers are making incredible and often false claims. This was the driving force of the founder of IV to tease out fact versus fiction.

IV hydration therapy has developed an impressive scientific team that has performed 100’s of hours of literature review of potential supplemental products along with these claims and has developed an extensive bank of research information.

IV believes in proper and appropriate medicine via a scientific and totally transparent approach with understanding, separation, and the combination of both scientific and anecdotal evidence.

Our products are based on a scientific approach researched and designed by highly qualified scientific providers, including physicians (DO and homeopathic), pharmacists, and PhDs. We know once you use our products, you will be a user of our products for life.

R2 Medical Clinic, the infusion center of Denver, Colorado, takes your Health and Wellness very seriously and chooses to only provide the best quality products or iv therapy to ensure optimum performance. This is why we have partnered with IV, which is backed by an incredible team, to develop these amazing proprietary products through a dynamic and scientific methodology.

The slight increase in costs associated with this thorough research and development is most assuredly offset by the incomparable quality of the product.

Some Water Facts

Water comprises approximately 60% of our body weight in the average adult. This is lower in obese or over-weight patients since adipose tissue (fat) contains less water than lean tissue.

In general it is also a little lower in women due to the relatively higher content of adipose tissue in women. This 60% is represented as 20% of body weight is extracelluar (outside cells) and 40% of body weight is intracellular (inside cells). Typical daily water loss is due to urine, skin and lungs, and stool.

In Colorado, at altitude and relatively low humidity, the average person is typically some 1-2L depleted on body water volume. This deficit can lead to fatigue, irritability, headache, cramps, exercise intolerance, decreased cognition, and a potential slew of other metabolic negative ramifications in addition to kidney failure at the extreme.

As we all know, water intake is advised at approximately 25-35mL/kg/day to maintain homeostasis. A person weighing 70kg (154lbs) requires approximately 2.5L of total water intake per day to sustain their current water balance.

So, if you are already behind some 1-2L, then you have to consume greater than 2.5L of water per day whether it be by drinking or food water content.

Other Information

There is much debate on the efficacy of oral versus IV rehydration and the studies demonstrate no significant advantage from a pure hydration perspective. This is entirely a different story anecdotally. Almost everyone that receives IV fluids feels immediately better. Why do ER’s provide and athletes received IV rehydration?

Is intravenous IV hydration the end-all? The simple answer, not entirely sure. A study performed in 2012 demonstrated that individuals that drank 300mL of water absorbed about half of the water in about 11-13 minutes and all the water in 75-120minutes. So, to absorb a liter of fluid it could take up to 2 hours or more fully absorb.

IV supplementation or IV Infusion therapy Denver, co is not just about hydration. More importantly, it has to do with the absorption of vitamins, amino acids, and other nutrients. Some nutrients have basically zero GI absorption, such as Tumeric. Others have very low absorption and would require very high oral intake to reach concentrations that can be delivered by IV.

For example, let us consider Vitamin C. Approximately 70-90% of Vitamin C is absorbed in a day with an intake of 180mg. If you take 1000mg (1gm), only about 50% is absorbed in a day.

Thus, if your goal is to absorb 10,000mg (arguably dosing some feel is appropriate for treating acute flu and cold symptoms) then you would have to invest some 20,000mg (20 grams) of Vitamin C per day. That’s only 20, 1000mg, Vitamin-C tablets a day.

Thus, in addition to immediate hydration, IV supplementation or drip IV therapy has other significant importance and efficacy to aid in your health and wellness.

Q1. How do IV drips work?

IV (intravenous) means inside the veins. An IV drip works by delivering saline-based electrolyte solutions combined with vitamins and nutrients directly into your bloodstream through a small tube inserted into your vein. Most substances: water, vitamins, amino acids, and nutrients are absorped poorly through your gastro-intestinal (GI) tract.  Bypassing the digestive system, this instant dose of hydration, vitamins, and nutrients produces immediate positive effects. Typically, people feel more energetic and refreshed, with no harmful side effects.

Q2. What are the benefits of vitamin IV therapy?

The benefits of IV vitamin drip therapy depend on the nutrients you receive. All IV hydration therapy helps your body rehydrate. Other uses, dependent on your particular vitamins and nutrients, include:

  • Helping with vitamin deficiencies
  • Supports immune function
  • Increased energy
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Supports skin clarity
  • Can assist with migraine symptoms
  • Replete important co-factors such as NAD+ for appropriate energy and cellular function.

Q3. What can I expect during my IV supplementation treatment?

A healthcare professional will place a small tube (catheter) into your vein using a needle during your IV supplementation treatment. The needle is removed once the vein is located and the tube is inserted. This process is similar to any IV you have received at the doctor’s office or in a hospital setting. The catheter is attached to a bag containing the electrolyte solution, vitamins, and minerals you want to receive. The tube remains in your vein, and the liquid drips slowly through the tube into your vein. The entire process typically takes about 30-45 minutes.

Q4. How often should I receive vitamin IV treatments?

The frequency of IV vitamin treatment depends on your goals. Some people may only need IV treatments once or twice per month. Talk with the medical provider administering your treatment to determine the recommended frequency.

Q5. How soon will I feel the effects, and how long will they last?

Most patients feel the effects of IV vitamin treatment immediately; however, the intensity of the impact may be relevant to the hydration level and vitamin imbalances in your body. As those improve, the positive effects will still be present but may not feel as intense. However, factors such as age and overall health will influence how long the results from IV drip therapy last.

Q6. What side effects can I expect after my IV supplementation?

Receiving any IV may result in minor side effects such as minimal pain at the IV site.  Side effects from IV treatments are rare. Ensuring you receive IV supplementation only from a trained medical professional reduces your risk of minor IV-related side effects.

Q7. How should I prepare for my IV hydration therapy session?

  • Drink lots of water: It is essential to arrive at your IV therapy session as hydrated as possible, so drink plenty of water. This may seem counterintuitive since IV therapy boosts your body’s hydration and is often used specifically to treat dehydration; however, drinking plenty of water helps prepare your veins for IV therapy. 75% of Americans experience chronic dehydration. When you are dehydrated even a little, your veins contract, making it challenging to receive an IV.
  • Dress comfortably: An IV therapy appointment typically takes 30 – 45 minutes. During this time, you will be sitting still in our IV Lounge. This is a time for you to relax.
  • Bring something to do: To entertain yourself during your 30 – 45 minute vitamin IV therapy session, bring something quiet to do like a book, smartphone, or tablet (with earbuds or headphones), or your laptop. You can crochet, draw, meditate, or do any other quiet solo activity.
  • Bring a sweater or sweatshirt: some people experience a mild chill following IV treatment. Blankets are available as well.

Q8. What is the difference between an IV drip and an IV push?

An IV push, also known as a bolus, is a rapid injection method. Both IV push and IV drip methods start with a medical professional inserting a needle and catheter (tube) into a vein under the skin. The IV push method uses a syringe instead of the slow drip of an IV fluid bag. During an IV push, the plunger on the syringe is pressed. Pressing the syringe plunger “pushes” the vitamins and nutrients more quickly into the bloodstream.

Another significant difference between the IV push and IV drip is time. An IV push can be immediate to several minutes, whereas an IV drip takes about 30 – 40 minutes.

Q9. Is vitamin IV therapy more effective than taking oral vitamins?

Common vitamins received through IV therapy include vitamin C, B complex, b12, folic acid, calcium, electrolytes, NAD+, and other supplements such as amino acids or antioxidants. Since most of these vitamins and minerals are available as oral supplements, you may wonder, why choose IV therapy?

Most substances are not absorbed well through your gastro-intestinal (GI) tract.  With IV hydration therapy, patients receive an instant wellness boost instead of benefits building up over time, as with oral supplements. In addition, with vitamin drip therapy, you can receive a custom blend of electrolytes, vitamins, and supplements specifically for your needs and desired results. IV therapy is also more effective as your body absorbs more nutrients from the supplements you receive. Bypassing the digestive system eliminates concerns about malabsorption.
