PRP Injections: Not All Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatments Are Same

Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a relatively new holistic medical treatment that uses platelet-rich injections to help rejuvenate tissues that have trouble healing via the body’s normal processes.

As we age or become ill, our bodies may not produce the platelets we need for healing as quickly or effectively as they did during youth. Not to mention, plenty of platelets that the body dispatches to heal a wound never reach the site due to damage or cell destruction.

PRP is used to enhance the body’s natural healing processes by introducing healthy cells directly into the site in which they’re needed.

While this sounds straightforward, not all PRP therapies are the same. As with many holistic procedures, these treatments are customizable to suit patients with unique needs.

Types of PRP Injection Therapy

Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy is a holistic medical procedure that uses the plasma from a patient’s blood sample, then isolates the rich platelet concentration therein. This platelet-rich plasma is then injected into an area of the patient’s body that requires more focused and intensive healing.

There are two main types of platelet-rich plasma therapy.

  • Pure PRP: This PRP injection type uses an individual’s blood sample to extract pure platelet-rich plasma by spinning the sample in a centrifuge. This process removes white blood cells from the sample and has low levels of the clotting protein known as fibrin.
  • Leukocyte and PRP: This type is similar to standard PRP injections, but it keeps the sample’s leukocyte count and the low fibrin matrix.

Both types of PRP therapy are used to speed up a patient’s natural healing abilities. These therapies are effective forms of holistic healthcare by enhancing cellular regeneration and increasing growth factors in patients. Due to the growth factors in this treatment, many people seek PRP for muscle growth and site-specific healing.

PRP Therapy Customization

In addition to the general subtypes of PRP composition, this therapy type can be further customized to meet the patient’s specific needs. Depending on the nature of the injury, the patient’s current health, the location of the injury, and the primary function of the injured body part, providers may adjust the contents of the injection to aid healing as much as possible.

For example, two patients can receive the same therapeutic care, but one patient’s platelet concentration may be significantly different from the other. To meet the body’s platelet needs without providing too much or too little, a doctor will ensure that each patient receives the appropriate concentration.

Further, injection schedules may differ from one patient to another. While one patient may need an injection every two months, another might only require an injection every six months.

Finally, some providers will enhance the patient’s PRP injection therapy by adding thrombin or calcium chloride to the mixture if the patient needs to take advantage of the full regenerative capacity of their treatments.
